Description

If anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind -- The Quran

Philosophical discussion of the 'intellectual' problem of evil -- the problem of how to reconcile the existence of a perfectly good God with the world's evil -- is vitiated by theodicy's quantitative and instrumental assumptions about moral justification. Discussion of the 'existential' problem, which concerns how one can live happily and gratefully in the world given its evil, is undermined by similar assumptions about value in general. The cold arithmetic of theodicy is a failure. One dire evil can pollute the world -- and one single act of remarkable goodness can redeem it.
